If you are having “check-in” meetings, especially now during a time when teams feel lost and need more communication and direction for what’s most important, the human element is the agenda. Allow people to share with you and each other how they’re doing. You may be doing this more often than usual during the Shelter-At-Home phase. That’s OK—without honoring their humanity, you won’t have their attention or alignment around objectives. They can be brief in their sharing, but they will bond better by hearing from each other. Teams will come out the other side of this world-changing event better, stronger or they will be distanced and begin to disintegrate. There won’t be a neutral. When you keep the focus tight, include the people who need to be included and decide on next steps forward, who owns what and record specific target dates, you create clarity. People need clarity about what is most important today.
